We are not a fraction of the universe, but indeed mirrors of our effort
To the Cynic, the world is a slot machine. The only winning move is to play the odds. They buy a thousand lottery tickets and send a thousand resumes into the void, believing every pull of the lever outputs a random result. Effort is pointless, the machine is unloving.
And the Cynic is right.
Their thousand applications land them a job at a company that also plays the numbers game…a high-turnover sales floor, a corporate behemoth looking for a warm body. The Cynic gets a job as impersonal as their application and is proven right. The machine is chaos.
To the Optimist, the world is a series of puzzles. The winning move is to change the odds through effort and creativity. They spend a month studying a company, hours crafting a single application, and write a cold email that shows they’ve already started doing the work.
And the Optimist is right.
Their effort lands them a job with a small, dedicated team that values craft. The recruiter read every line of their cover letter. Their future boss has their resume highlighted. The Optimist earns a job where effort is meaningful and is proven right. Effort matters, the machine loves you.
Optimism is a moral duty.
